Dropvi vs Smash: for large free transfers
Smash Free sets no fixed size limit, but transfers over 2 GB join a queue behind Pro transfers and are sent after a waiting period. Dropvi Free sends up to 50 GB per transfer, and no transfer waits in a queue for paid users.
Smash Free includes an optional password and needs no sign-up. Dropvi also needs no account to send a link, but PIN or password protection comes with Business Pro and above. The table below sets out the differences.

Which should you use?
For a free transfer under 2 GB, both services send without a queue and keep files for up to 7 days. The difference shows above 2 GB, and in whether you need a password on the free plan.
Smash is the better fit if
- You want a password on a free transfer. Dropvi includes PIN or password protection on Business Pro and above.
- You want to send more than 1 TB in one transfer on a paid plan. Smash lists unlimited transfer size on Pro.
- You do not mind waiting for a large free transfer to be sent.
Dropvi is the better fit if
- You send more than 2 GB for free and do not want the transfer to wait in a queue.
- You need a transfer to stay online for up to 30 days and to be larger than 2 GB without waiting, on Business Pro.
How Dropvi handles a large transfer
Dropvi works out a SHA-256 checksum for every file in the sender's browser during the upload, and shows it on the download page. Your recipient can download single files or every file as one ZIP, and a dropped connection is retried automatically.
The browser uploader cannot resume an interrupted upload. For large or unreliable uploads, the free Dropvi command-line tool resumes from the first part not yet stored, and its download command checks each file's SHA-256.
Where Dropvi falls short
- Dropvi Free has no password. Smash Free does.
- Dropvi Free takes up to 50 GB per transfer. Smash states no size limit, although transfers over 2 GB wait in a queue.
- The browser uploader cannot resume an interrupted upload. Only the Dropvi CLI can.
- Paid Dropvi transfers top out at 1 TB on Teams & Suite.
