Video Bitrate and Transfer Time Calculator

Work out how large your footage is from its bitrate and running time, and how long it takes to upload at your connection speed.

Calculator

Apple target data rate; ProRes is variable bitrate.Source

Duration of each file

Each one has the same bitrate and duration.

Type your upload speed, for example from a speed test.

Added to the size. Use it to allow for audio, container data or network overhead.

Total Size

33.08 GB

30.80 GiB

GB means 109 bytes. GiB means 230 bytes.

Transfer Time

Add a connection speed

Hours and minutes at a steady speed.

Fits in one Dropvi Free transfer (the limit is 50 GiB, about 53.69 GB).

How the Calculator Works

  • Size in bytes = bitrate (Mbps) × 1,000,000 × duration (seconds) ÷ 8 × number of files × (1 + overhead ÷ 100)
  • GB = bytes ÷ 1,000,000,000, and GiB = bytes ÷ 1,073,741,824
  • Transfer time (seconds) = bytes × 8 ÷ (connection speed (Mbps) × 1,000,000)

Worked example. Apple lists ProRes 422 at 1920 x 1080 and 30p as 147 Mbps. One hour is 147 × 1,000,000 × 3,600 ÷ 8 = 66,150,000,000 bytes, which is 66.15 GB or 61.61 GiB. At 100 Mbps that takes 66,150,000,000 × 8 ÷ 100,000,000 = 5,292 seconds, about 1 h 28 min.

GB and GiB. Drive makers count 1 GB as 1,000,000,000 bytes. Some apps and operating systems count in binary, where 1 GB is 1,073,741,824 bytes, so the same file can show a smaller number. The calculator shows both.

Presets. ProRes is variable bitrate. Apple says the actual data rate is usually close to the target and that the maximum per frame is about 10% above it, so an overhead of 10% gives an upper estimate. Apple's and YouTube's figures are video bitrates, so audio adds to the total. For the YouTube 8K and 2160p rows, YouTube gives a range and the calculator uses the upper figure. Blackmagic lists storage rates in MB/s at 30 fps; the calculator reads MB/s as megabytes per second and multiplies by 8 to get Mbps.

Connection speed. Chromium browsers such as Chrome and Edge report a connection estimate, which prefills the speed field. That estimate never goes above 10 Mbps, and Firefox and Safari do not report one, so type your own upload speed for a realistic result. The time assumes a steady speed, so treat it as a guide.
